Our mission at TEAMJEROME.ORG is to improve the odds for those in need of a marrow transplant to find a donor by raising awareness on a national level for African Americans, Asians, Native Americans, Latinos, Multiracial Americans and others to register as marrow donors. To date, with the support of people like you, and City of Hope National Cancer Institute, we’ve registered nearly 1,000 potential marrow donors!
My name is Jerome Williams and I was diagnosed with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) in 2003 and if I don’t have a marrow transplant soon I will die. TEAMEROME.ORG was founded in an effort to find a marrow donor match for myself and others in my predicament. I’m African American, French and Native American which makes my search for a marrow donor all the more difficult since matching is based on one’s genetic makeup.
Thousands of people with diverse ethnic backgrounds are diagnosed each year with diseases such as leukemia that require a marrow transplant as the only known cure. In most cases, patients have to turn to the national marrow donor registry to find an unrelated marrow donor match. The national marrow donor registry has about 6 million registered donors. The odds of finding a marrow donor match within the registry is as follows: Caucasians 70%; African Americans 10%; Asians 9%; Latinos 9%; and Multiracial Americans or Others are 2%. There’s no good reason why all of the numbers can’t be 100%!
To our detriment, people of color are grossly underrepresented in the national marrow donor registry. What this means is if you or someone you love is in need of a marrow transplant the odds of finding a marrow donor is highly unlikely. Countless lives may be saved as a result of healthy people giving of themselves to assist those that are not as healthy.
Cancer plagues us all, from the patient, to family members, to caregivers and friends. We at TEAMJEROME.ORG are working to improve the odds of minorities being able to find marrow donors but we need your help.
